Bobby Robson would have been 83 today, this real football man knew his stuff....
"What is a club in any case? Not the buildings or the directors or the people who are paid to represent it. It’s not the television contracts, get-out clauses, marketing departments or executive boxes.

It’s the noise, the passion, the feeling of belonging, the pride in your city. It’s a small boy clambering up stadium steps for the very first time, gripping his father’s hand, gawping at that hallowed stretch of turf beneath him and, without being able to do a thing about it, falling in love. "

RIP Sir Bob

As a matter of fact Robson eventually managed Ipswich Town after Sir Alf Ramsey . Ramsey took Ipswich from the old third division into the First division and won the league at the first attempt. This achievement lead to the FA offering the England job to Ramsey and the rest is history.

The reason that Newcastle have a statue (as do Ipswich, and a stand), is that he was a true Geordie.... a local lad come good. I thought that they treated him badly by sacking him. But what a manager and person in hindsight.

Took a small town club to be one of the best in Europe, was unluckily knocked out of two world cups - both games were down to bad luck (a shitty handball, and amazing clearance as Lineker was about to score and a penalty shoot out despite hitting the inside of the post and having it rebound past Lineker again). Won trophies in different countries (when Barca were not the best team in Spain either), rescued Newcastle from relegation to European football.

The guy was both an amazing person by all accounts (look at how Gazza, Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose all revere about him), a battler with his survival from cancer (had half of the inside of his head removed at one point), and true footballing great.
Antone who thinks otherwise is talking bollocks IMO.

Oh yeah. I could do a Texas, iyawnsofcanadia, croe or griff and rather than hold my hands up claim I meant his goal in 90 anyway...maintaining how right i am! ;-)

Infidel, to be fair I spent the belgium game pestering my dad for a mars ice cream in tenerife as i was just a kid. but i was definitely bored.

When he was manager of Ipswich, his strategy for coping with Sir Trevor was to have several players taking turns to foul him. In that way they avoided being sent off.

I would have thought Ipswich would be the club side he had most success with and the one he should be associated with?

86 wasn't like 82. Maradona aside and a couple of long range efforts

Tournament football tends to be shit bar the odd game

Moore was at our club a lot lot lot longer though and everyone thought of us connected to him

Robson has far more to do with Ipswich and Fulham than he ever did Newcastle

Didn't Robson also encourage Andre Villas BOAS who was an annoying kid who lived in the same apartment block as Robson when he was Porto manager and kept bombarding him with tactical ideas?

Guilt. Same reason we named a stand after Bobby Moore.

World cup's tend to be shit, tight games. 82 was different, but by and large World Cups are pretty shit tournaments.

Its the expectation, the media, the long summer days, even better if you make a game or two, I've done a few and also been in various parts of the world (as its the summer) watching games in bars etc. All your mates, dreaming, wondering, usually some doris on your arm by the end of the night as they love a football tournament

The longer you are in, the greater it is, who gives a fuck how shit the games are
